AHC Background

An AHC is a legal requirement for taking a pet into the EU. This may change in the future but until details are released an AHC is the required document. An AHC is only valid for one return journey with up to five pets. This means a new AHC is required for each entry into the EU. As an Official Veterinarian I am authorised to issue AHCs.

Things to Consider

Generally we will only issue an AHC for animals that are travelling and returning with their owner.

All animals must have a functioning microchip before their rabies vaccination.

All cat/dog/ferret pets travelling with their owner as a pet will need a rabies vaccine when they are at least 12 weeks of age.

An AHC cannot be issued until at least 21 days after vaccination, with the day of vaccination being day 0. This will depend on the vaccine brand and the manufacturer’s instructions.

An AHC can only be issued for up to 10 days before the date of travel. If the certificate is not used for any reason within these ten days then a new one must be issued, so it is advisable to ensure all travel bookings are confirmed. Day one is the day of signing the certificate.

The AHC is also valid for return to Great Britain from the EU within four months of the date of issue provided that the rabies vaccination is kept up to date and, for dogs, appropriate tapeworm treatment is administered 24 – 120 hours before re-entering Great Britain and endorsed on the certificate by the administering veterinarian in the EU.

If you are travelling solely to Northern Ireland (i.e. not ultimately travelling on to Ireland or the EU) you can use the Northern Ireland Pet Travel Scheme. Pet owners can apply for the lifelong pet travel document free of charge via the following link: Taking your pet dog, cat or ferret abroad: Travelling to Northern Ireland – GOV.UK
