At Home Pet Euthanasia

Saying goodbye to a beloved pet is not easy. My goal is always to make your pets euthanasia as peaceful and calm as possible, both for them and you.

Saying Goodbye

Saying goodbye to a beloved pet should be as calm and peaceful as possible. Unfortunately, this can be difficult in a busy veterinary clinic. Even with a dedicated space, bringing a frail or elderly pet into a public clinic can be stressful.

Clinics are often busy, and despite everyone’s best efforts, it can be hard to create a truly tranquil environment. Time pressures and other appointments can also limit how much space and time can be given.

Choosing the Right Environment

At Home

Having your pet euthanised at home removes many of the challenges presented at clinics. Your pet stays in familiar surroundings, and you can choose the setting – perhaps a favourite spot in the house or garden – allowing for a gentler, more private goodbye.

The Meadow Room at Dignity

If a home visit doesn’t feel right, we can arrange to use The Meadow Room at Dignity Pet Crematorium in Winchfield. This quiet, dedicated garden room can be booked in advance and offers you the time and privacy to say goodbye.

A Personalised Approach

There’s no single “right” way to approach this moment. I work with each family to find what feels best. Some owners want to hold their pet; others prefer not to be present for every stage, such as the placement of a cannula. If the weather is kind, we can be outside in the garden or maybe there’s a particular place in the home which feels right.

Appointments

Simply contact me to arrange an appointment. Before the appointment, I ask owners to sign a consent form, which includes your wishes for aftercare – whether burial, communal, or individual cremation.

At home pet euthanasia

Where possible, to help your pet relax I give them a sedative. Once sedated, I administer a final injection typically through an IV catheter, which works quickly. After confirming your pet has passed, I give you time to say goodbye before leaving.

Aftercare

You will need to consider your aftercare wishes ahead of the appointment. I’m happy to guide you through the options and make arrangements that feel right for you and your pet.

If you would like more detail on any part of the process please do not hesitate to contact me, and I will be more than happy to explain in more detail the procedure or discuss any specialist requirements you may have.

Second Opinion Service

We know that making important decisions about your pet’s health can be overwhelming. When you’re faced with complex information or difficult choices, it’s natural to want clarity and reassurance. Our second opinion service helps you feel confident about the next steps in your pet’s care.

What’s Involved

Our second opinion process includes:

  • Gathering information: We obtain your pet’s medical history from your primary care vet and, if needed, any referral clinicians.
  • Liaising with your vets: We communicate directly with your veterinary team to ensure all details are complete.
  • Case review: We review and summarise all available information.
  • Discussion: Before meeting your pet, we’ll discuss the case with you by phone to understand your concerns
  • Examination: We then examine your pet, ideally in their home environment to keep them relaxed.
  • Report & recommendations: We provide a written summary and recommendations, shared with you and your primary vet.

Please note, we cannot perform surgery or prescribe or dispense medication. If medication is advised, you’ll need to arrange this through your primary care vet.

Costs:

  • Telephone consultation: £75
  • In Farnham second opinion (GU9): £150
  • At home second opinion: £200* (within 5 miles of Farnham town centre) *Additional mileage charges may apply for visits outside this area.

All second opinion consultations are conducted in accordance with RCVS guidance on referrals and second opinions. Referrals and Second Opinions – RCVS Guidance
