Taking Your Pets Abroad? All You Need to Know About AHCs (Animal Health Certificates)
Planning a holiday or a move abroad and want to take companions with you? Travelling with pets can be a wonderful experience, but it requires careful preparation—especially when it comes to paperwork. One of the most important documents you’ll need is an Animal Health Certificate (AHC).
In this blog, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about AHCs, from what they are to how and when to get one, so you and your pet can travel stress-free.
What Is an Animal Health Certificate (AHC)?
An Animal Health Certificate is a legal document that replaced the EU Pet Passport for travel from the UK to EU countries post-Brexit. It confirms that your pet meets the travel requirements for entry into the EU.
AHCs are required for each trip and must be issued no more than 10 days before travel.
Which Pets Need an AHC?
AHCs are required for:
- Dogs
- Cats
- Ferrets
Each pet must have their own certificate, though they can be issued together if you’re travelling with multiple animals.
What Are the Requirements?
To get an AHC, your pet must:
✅ Be microchipped
✅ Be over 12 weeks old to receive the rabies vaccine
✅ Have a valid rabies vaccination (at least 21 days before travel)
✅ Visit an Official Veterinarian (OV) to issue the certificate
Some countries may also require tapeworm treatment, particularly for dogs travelling to places like Finland, Ireland, and Malta. We can advise you on country-specific rules.
When Should You Get an AHC?
Timing is crucial. Here’s a suggested timeline:
At least 1 month before travel: Make sure your pet is microchipped and up-to-date with rabies vaccination.
1–2 weeks before travel: Book your AHC appointment with a certified OV (Official Veterinarian). The AHC must be issued within 10 days of your travel date.
What Does the AHC Cover?
- The AHC allows your pet to:
- Enter the EU
- Travel within the EU for up to 4 months
- Re-enter Great Britain
If you’re planning extended travel or multiple trips, you’ll need a new AHC for each journey.
